Thanks to the power of Netflix Instant, I’ve been transfixed with Friday Night Lights (FNL). FNL was one of those great shows nobody watched, but managed to crank out five seasons thanks to a strong fanbase, critical acclaim, and some clever maneuvering between NBC and DirecTV. Granted, I hear the word “sports” mentioned in the same breath as “television,” and my gay genes scream, “EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEeeeeeeeeeeeeehhhhh.” But FNL succeeds thanks to the following reasons:

Steven Soderbergh's Haywire is the perfect antithesis to Hollywood's long-standing tradition of "waif-fu," wherein the studio tries to convince us that a tiny, hundred-pound heroine manages to cut down baddies three-times her size (and weight) without flinching. (Bonus points if said heroine holds two Uzis akimbo and isn't knocked back on her ass!) Soderbergh's foray into action-schlock ditches that paradigm altogether by hiring an actual bruiser (MMA fighter and former American Gladiator Gina Carano) to do all the rough-and-tumble work.
